Indeed, mind-wandering–the tendency to have thoughts unrelated to your current task–is the exact opposite of mindfulness, being totally immersed in a situation and absorbed by it.
But keep in mind: you can’t diagnose your dog yourself. Just the other day I talked to someone whose dog was exhibiting these symptoms, and it turned out the dog had a brain tumor. So please see your vet as soon as you can! Good luck, and I’m sorry this is happening to your dog. Eileen.
